101 Years of Architecture in Thorpeness

This relaxed guided stroll will lead you through the once private fantasy village built from 1910 onwards, tell of its founder, his dream of the perfect coastal holiday resort for the middle classes and what happened after he had died.

Learn about the poor fishing village Thorpe that has become Thorpeness - and a place for the rich. The story begins with a Scottish gentleman, who made a strange decision after coastal flooding in November 1910. Monika will also tell you about the design of the artificial Thorpeness Meare, its connection to J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan and many other anecdotes surrounding this unusual place. Listen to further fascinating stories about the architectural development of the unique village, while we walk past the famous House in the Clouds, the historic windmill, the stylish Country Club and its well designed golf course. We will finish on the beach, with the tale of an unusual Norwegian house built in the dunes in 2011.

The walk is suitable for all levels of knowledge, including families with children of over 10 years. Sensible clothing and closed footwear are recommended. Please consider that we will walk up to 5km, parts of the route can have rough, muddy, sandy or uneven ground and we will walk on the shingle beach as well. The beach unfortunately restricts the use of pushchairs and wheelchairs and our route is not fully accessible to wheels normally, but we can change it to one that is, if you ask us for it at the time of booking.

Dogs on a lead are welcome on our tour, but they are not allowed on the shingle beach from May to October.

Price: £9 per person. Please note that booking in advance is essential. Places are limited to ten participants and we need a minimum of two bookings to go ahead.
